Mom's ICU nurse Cory, who we love, just called to say, "Your mother insists that you bring the New York Times! She's definitely ready to get out of the ICU if she's begging for the NYT!"
Mom is doing great today (so says Cory). But I believe him because Vicky, Kate and I all saw her yesterday and she was eating soup and Jello. She was looking for cute doctors for me, talking about skipping the nursing home part of the recovery, and asking to sit up! She said that she felt better than when she got out of the other spine surgery.
I'm going in there momentarily...locked and loaded with the paper under my arm. She should be on a regular unit by this afternoon and receiving visitors as early as tomorrow.

Very relieved to get your good news! Give Diane a big hug from John and me - I'll be over to Stanford Monday or Tuesday for a visit.
