Araby has her take on yesterday's doctor visit. Go Araby!
-------
Araby here with all the recent news. Yesterday Diane had a very successful – if brief! – visit with the knee surgeon and his able assistant. You would have been proud of Diane. She had all her questions written out (no surprise there) and was able to shoulder through asking all of them, even as the tall and dashing, if slightly aloof, knee god hung on the examination room door, never quite entering the room completely and poised to bolt at any second. But bolt he did not, since Diane, like the Columbo in the old TV series, continued to have “just one more question.”
He decreed that she is well “ahead of the curve” as far as healing goes and things are “fixed and in good position.” The x-rays are stunning – Diane is now more bionic than ever, so watch out. Can kickboxing classes be far behind?
A few contradictions were left in his breezy wake – she has permission to drive, but she’s still on the strong pain meds. Hmmmm. And he recommended Fosamax over Boniva for bone strength, even in light of new controversial findings about Fosamax that we’ve all heard about in Time, if not the Journal of the AMA. (Diane is on Boniva and plans to stay that way.) So, as we continue to realize, we must be our own governors and physicians even while basking in the advice of the experts. Sigh.
So buoyed was Diane by her blue ribbon visit that we zipped right over to the Cantor Art Center where she regaled me for an hour with wonderful insights on masterpieces from the Gilded Age right through some pretty scary contemporary sculptures. Great fun for me, but I had to pry her away, finally, to wander home to a “medley” of meds and more icing, icing, icing – the cold kind rather than the sweet kind. As you know, she’s sweet enough already.
Over the next month Diane will have regular PT and more exercises, and that ice will always be with her – didn’t realize it was such a big part of the healing process. If she shows up at your next meeting or lunch with Ziplocs full, just accept that the iceman cometh and make sure she remembers to elevate that leg and keep it iced even as she contributes and opines. She’ll definitely get back to 100% Diane (perhaps 110%), but this is going to be a team sport until April. Let’s hear it for Team Diane!

Back to Diane.....Topping off this week was our lovely lunch with Mary from San Francisco.
See you soon. Look for me in the salsa class.
Love,
Diane
