September, 2011

Dear Friends,

If anybody is still checking, I have been derelict in my blog posting. I have no great excuse. I have completed physical therapy. I do the assigned exercises every day. I take a walk using my trekking sticks every day and go to Curves 5 times per week. This is really paying off! I still have numb feet, but my endurance is much greater than before. I have strengthened my core muscles and my thigh muscles. All of this is good news as I am headed for Europe soon.

One of my favorite summer events is my annual rendezvous with my Texas friends. This year we stayed in a special house in Taos, New Mexico, once owned by an artist in the early 1900's. We love being together and exploring historical places. We also love to eat out!

I recently returned from a reunion of the Fontaine and Maury families in Charlottesville, VA. The Fontaines are my Huguenot ancestors who were evicted from France in 1685. Finally settling in Ireland, Jaques Fontaine sent 3 of his children to the Colonies in 1716. They settled in Virginia. I am related to his son Peter. In order to join the Huguenot Society, I had to give proof of this ancestry. Wasn't easy. I was rejected the first time, but then I found proof in deeds and wills that one relative was indeed the son of another. Finally, I was admitted. My college friend, Dee who lives in Charleston, SC, is the revered maven of Fontaine heritage as she retranslated the memoirs of Jaques (his spelling) Fontaine from French to English. Dee is married to John, another college friend.

Here are photos from my trip:

I am so glad that I went to the reunion. Dee and I gave a short presentation on how we reconnected, 45 years post-graduation and how we discovered that we were related through Jaques Fontaine. Wonderful serendipity.

Back home again I settled into my usual routine - coffee at Peet's with my comrades, lunch with friends, writing, reading, movies, and more.

Cilla, one of my college roommates, visits often. Here we are posing in a new Los Altos restaurant.

Kate and Meg are doing well. I am blessed in many ways.

Love to you all,
Diane
